What are wake windows?
Wake windows are the stretches of time your baby stays awake between sleeps. Getting them right is one of the most important factors in helping your baby nap well and sleep through the night. When a baby stays awake too long, they become overtired and overstimulated, making it harder to fall asleep. Too short, and they simply are not tired enough to settle.
Wake windows change as your baby grows. A newborn might only handle 35 to 45 minutes of awake time before needing sleep again, while a 10-month-old can comfortably stay up for 3 to 4 hours between naps. The shift happens gradually, and it is not always obvious when your baby is ready to stretch their wake window longer.
Common signs that a wake window is ending include yawning, rubbing eyes, turning away from stimulation, and fussiness. Ideally, you want to start the nap routine before these cues become intense. This calculator uses age-appropriate averages from pediatric sleep research to suggest a full daily schedule, but every baby is different. Some babies trend toward the shorter end of the range, others the longer end.
A few tips for using wake windows effectively: the first wake window of the day is usually the shortest, wake windows tend to gradually lengthen throughout the day, and the last wake window before bedtime is typically the longest. If your baby is consistently fighting a nap, it may be time to extend their wake window by 10 to 15 minutes.
This calculator gives you a static snapshot of the day. In practice, schedules shift constantly. A short nap throws off the next wake window. A late wake-up compresses the afternoon. Tempo handles all of this automatically, recalculating your baby's plan in real time as you log what actually happens throughout the day.
